Parent Counseling
Counseling, Education and Support for Parents of Children with
Developmental or Psychological Problems

The Center of Revitalizing Psychiatry, a full service psychiatric clinic located in the center of
Hackensack, offers educational workshops as well as support and training group for parents of children
with
autism, mental retardation, ADHD, childhood bipolar and other developmental disorders. The
incidence of such disorders has increased tremendously in the recent decade, and many parents today
can benefit from a comfortable environment where they can learn the necessary skills, share
information, receive and provide emotional and practical assistance to each other.

Working with children means working with parents. We believe that educational workshops and group
like ours can facilitate the treatment you provide to children.

Educational workshops happen as a need arises and last for an hour and a half. Parents are offered an
overview of childhood developmental disorders and the impact of raising a neuro-atypical child on the
family. Discussion is the concluding part of every workshop.

The parent group meets weekly for 60 minute sessions.  Topics typically include:

  • neurobiological origins of these disorders
  • identification of behavioral and relational goals for the child
  • ways to create a healthier and less stressful home environment
  • assistance in issues with siblings
  • navigation through the existing support systems, e.g. special education
  • path to accepting the reality of having a neuro-atypical child

The group leader is Katya Chizhova, MSW, LCSW. She is a licensed psychotherapist who takes special
interest in helping families raise children with developmental disorders. Herself a mother of an
Asperger/Bipolar child, Mrs. Chizhova can relate to emotional, educational and social challenges to these
children and their parents.
